Text to Symbol: An artistic Midrash workshop
We are known as the ‘People of the Book’. A love of the Hebrew language, word play and word interpretation from shorashim to gematria play a central role in Jewish tradition and thought. But what happens when we free ourselves from words to express our ideas and understanding in symbolic ways, using colours and symbols? In this workshop, we will grapple with a challenging and well-known Torah text and collaborate to retell and interpret the narrative without words . No artistic ability or skills required.

Somebody Else: The strange fate of an invisible sage
Accused of a host of misdemeanors, from the comic to the perverse, Elisha ben Abuya is probably the most sinful rabbi in the Mishna... except that he isn't really in the Mishna at all. In this session, participants will be introduced to the key texts that speak of Elisha, and will consider a range of different answers to those most elusive of questions: who was he, what did he do, and why was his name erased from the text?

Could a Jeremy Corbyn-esque figure emerge in Australia?
The behaviour and attitude of UK opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn towards the Jewish community has attracted great attention and ever-growing concern. Jewish UK Labour Party members have experienced overt antisemitism, and direct exclusion from the party's spaces. Corbyn himself has refused to acknowledge that antisemitism has pervaded UK Labour, and has not punished those responsible for alienating and offending British Jews. Could a figure like Corbyn rise up through the ranks of any of the political parties in Australia, and what would that mean for the Jewish community here? Our panellists will seek to answer these questions and more in what promises to be an engaging and important discussion for our community.
